Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 1/25 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (divided)
  • 1/2 cup sugar (consider using brown sugar for deeper flavor)
  • 2 packages active-dry yeast
  • 2 teaspoons salt (to balance sweetness)
  • 3/4 cup warm milk
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/2 cup softened butter
  • 1 large egg (beaten, at room temperature)
  • 1 1/2 cups packed brown sugar (for topping)
  • 3/4 cup light corn syrup
  • 3/4 cup room temperature butter (for topping)
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar (for filling)
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/3 cup melted butter

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of flour with sugar, yeast, and salt. In another bowl, mix warm milk and water with softened butter and beaten egg. Gradually add the liquid mixture to the dry ingredients until combined; then add more flour to form a soft dough.
  2. Knead on a floured surface for about 6-8 minutes until smooth. Place in a greased bowl, cover with cloth, and let rise until doubled in size (about one hour).
  3. For the caramel topping: Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat, stir in brown sugar and corn syrup until combined. Pour into a greased baking dish and sprinkle pecans on top.
  4. Once risen, punch dough down and roll it out into a rectangle. Spread melted butter over the dough; sprinkle with cinnamon, nutmeg, brown sugar, and any remaining nuts. Roll tightly into a log shape; slice into twelve equal pieces.
  5. Place sliced buns cut-side down on top of the caramel mixture in the baking dish. Cover again; let rise for about thirty minutes while preheating oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for twenty-five to thirty minutes until golden brown.
